Pet peeves and other journalist lessons from Twitter- December 2020

Pet peeves is back this 2021 with… the December 2020 edition. One of the darkest years in a long time is finally over. But to truly and finally wrap up the year in pet peeves fashion as well, here are the last pet peeves journalists had in 2020. May 2021 commence!

Timing is everything! Don’t let the external or internal pressure make you contact journalists at the wrong time. You will thank yourself later.

Did we mention timing? Also worth mentioning: space. As in, leave some space for people to breathe oxygen.

Our favourite issue: wrong name. In this case, creating a first name out of a last name. Classic.

For some journalists, phone calls are from 1999 and should not be resurrected.

Most journalists don’t need, no, don’t want, you to ask how they are. Unless you know them, you can be extremely straightforward and skip any ‘pleasantries’ to jump straight into the pitch.

There is a time and place for everything. For most journalists, the place is not Instagram.

Usually, journalists that are interested in you will ask to be added to a distribution list, if they are unable to find them.

It might help journalists to open the email, but probably they will not receive your message the way you would like to, if you tell them they are going to die.

Come on guys. We can do better than this.
