Your Definitive Guide to European Startup Media

For hundreds of years, people have thought about the meaning of Europe. In history, Europeaness has been linked to the legacy of the Greeks, Roman and French laws, language families, culture and religion. In politics and geography, common shared values, EU membership, or certain natural boundaries. And don’t get me started on Brexit. Whatever it might be, it is complex. And we can say the same for media. From local to regional to national to international to pan-European, from Portuguese and Catalan to Estonian and Hungarian, there is no shortage of types of media, diversity of coverage and opinions. And even media from across the pond can sometimes be, not just very desirable, but also quite relevant.

Something similar applies to European startup media outlets. There are outlets for geographies, verticals, the business of tech, the innovation side, as well as different combinations of these. Here’s our small grain of sand to map it out and understand the startup media landscape a bit better.

Enjoy!

🇪🇺 PAN-EUROPEAN

Sifted – Pan-European | English

Sifted is the biggest startup reporting operation in Europe, and unsurprisingly provides some of the most in-depth coverage and analysis in the space. It’s like a mini Financial Times but for European startups! While funding rounds may also feature as part of their coverage, Sifted is more focused on exploring the ins and outs of startup trends, including AI, policy, fintech, climate tech, but also investing, building and managing in the startup world.

Backed by the Financial Times, Sifted goes for high journalistic standards while retaining the startup-like agility and ambition. In recent years, Sifted has significantly expanded its data-driven journalism and data capabilities, offering subscribers access to industry reports, funding insights, and deep-dive briefings. Sifted has several leading startup newsletters and notable vertical strengths with dedicated journalists. The startup life newsletter is one of our favourites.

The Sifted Summit, which debuted in December 2021, is now a major annual event held in London every October, featuring top startup founders, investors, and ecosystem players. Additionally, Sifted continues to host smaller, theme-focused events across Europe.

Sifted’s team follows clear beats and regional coverage, making it essential to check their team page before pitching. Their editor is Amy Lewin. Watch our interview with former Sifted’s former Senior Reporter Zosia Wanat, here.

The Next Web – Pan-European | English

The Next Web (TNW) is a long-standing tech media brand that covers global technology trends, with a strong focus on the European angle. Find coverage and analysis on startups, innovation, and emerging tech from the continent. Founded and based in the Netherlands, TNW is a pan-European operation with startup programs, corporate innovation services and one of the best-known and visited startup conferences of the continent. The Financial Times acquired TNW in 2019, which in a way makes it Sifted’s (more tech/innovation-focused, and less business-focused) cousin. If you’re wondering ‘what’s next in tech in Europe’ you might wanna head over to them.

The flagship TNW Conference, held annually in Amsterdam (luckily in the summer), is one of Europe’s biggest tech events, bringing together founders, investors, and ecosystem leaders. In 2025, there are lots of novelties in store. As well as a renewed focus for TNW Conference, centred around their founding mission of elevating startups and scaleups shaping the future of humanity, Thomas Macaulay became their new managing editor. We’re keeping our eyes peeled for more updates!

Tech.eu also collects and analyses a number of startup data points, which it turns into insights for its readers. TechCrunch remains one of the most influential tech media outlets globally, covering startup funding, industry trends, and deep dives into emerging technology. In Europe, Editor-at-Large Mike Butcher remains a central figure, frequently covering major funding rounds and startup trends. He also spearheads The Europas Awards, which highlights the continent’s most promising startups. However, there are many more fantastic Europe-based journalists, including Natasha Lomas, Ingrid Lunden, Anna Heim and Romain Dillet.

Their events and podcasts are usually more geared towards US startups, although they don’t make any geographical exclusions and in fact European startups speak, attend and get a lot out of them. In fact, TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco is our only geographical exception in our European startup events list – many European startups speak wonders of it!
